Why the best toy is the one that gets out of the way

The case for free, screen-free, open-ended play in the most important years of a child’s life.

At Viking Toys, we’ve always believed that play is serious business. Not because it needs to be structured or educational in the traditional sense — but because for children aged 1 to 3, free play is how they learn everything.

As your partner, we want to share the thinking behind our products — and give you the language to talk to parents, educators and buyers about what really matters in the first years of a child’s life.

Free play — the most important thing a 1–3 year old can do

Between the ages of one and three, a child’s brain develops faster than at any other point in life. Synapses are forming, language is emerging, social awareness is awakening — and almost all of it happens through unstructured, child-led play.

Through play they’re building spatial reasoning, cause-and-effect understanding, physical coordination and emotional resilience. All at once. All by themselves.

What free play develops in ages 1–3

  • Motor skills & coordination
  • Imagination & creativity
  • Emotional self-regulation
  • Language & communication
  • Problem-solving & logic
  • Confidence & independence

The toy that steps back — and lets the child step forward

There’s a paradox at the heart of good toy design: the more a toy does, the less the child does. Toys that flash, beep, sing and instruct take over the narrative. The child becomes the audience — passive, entertained, but not growing.

A simple toy — a truck, a wheelbarrow, a set of vehicles — hands the story back to the child. Where does it go? What does it carry? Who is driving? Every question is answered by the child’s own imagination. That’s where development happens.

  • No instructions - Simple toys have no right or wrong way to play. The child invents the rules — and rewrites them every time.
  • Timeless design - Our clean, simple shapes have been played with since 1974. They don’t go out of style — because imagination never does.
  • Grows with the child - A 1-year-old explores it. A 3-year-old narrates it. The same toy, years of play — because the story changes as the child grows.

Screen-free play — why it matters more than ever

Screens are everywhere, and children are getting them younger and younger. We’re not here to judge, because parenting is hard. But we believe the hours a 1–3 year old spends in screen-free play are some of the most valuable of their lives.

On a screen, a child reacts to something someone else made. In physical play, the child makes it up themselves. That builds attention, patience, creativity and social skills.

A silent toy asks the child to bring the noise: their voice, their story, their imagination. That’s not a limitation. That’s the whole point.

How Viking Toys fits into this picture

Everything we make at Viking Toys is designed with this in mind. No batteries. No screens. No sounds that weren’t made by the child holding the toy. Our products are intentionally simple, soft, safe and silent — not because we couldn’t add features, but because we chose not to.

We make toys for the child who is becoming someone. And we trust that child to do the becoming — we just give them the right tools.

  • No batteries needed - Our toys are powered entirely by the child’s imagination — the most renewable energy source on the planet.
  • Safe from day one - Non-toxic, BPA-free, no sharp edges. Designed for children who explore with all their senses — including their mouths.
  • Quietly durable - No noise, no fuss. Built to survive years of play and still look like a toy worth passing on.
  • Open-ended always - No story written in advance. Every child writes their own — and that makes every play session unique.

We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. — George Bernard Shaw

Thank you for sharing our belief in the power of play. Together, we can make sure more children get the freedom and the tools to grow at their own pace.
